Because philosophy arises from awe, a philosopher is bound in his way to be a lover of myths and poetic fables. The reason why the philosopher can be compared to the poet is that both are concerned with wonder… (St. Thomas Aquinas)

musings on Church and State
I think people are now likely to compare his resignation (good) with the fact that his predecessor, who had Parkinson’s for many years, did not resign (bad). I see both as different sides of Christian witness: Pope Benedict is showing humility in accepting his growing weakness; Pope John Paul II chose to share his weakness with millions of other sick, frail people – thus showing humility on the world stage, as it were.
I agree Francis – both bear a witness to us.
From Francis Phillip to Watchtower Watchers.
Be aware Pope Benedict is in intractable chronic pain. He is not looking for a rest but blessed relief from physical suffering and the sense that he cannot perform to the very best of his ability because of this.
Regards.
Francis – thank you so much for sharing this with us. He is a truly great man, and I hope the great love shown him will be of some comfort.
This man has been a deep, clear thinker and kind to those who have known him (Kind which comes from kin) He been a ready target for those who think of him as Darth Vader, but to me he has guided the ship of the church in the necessary direction. I for one would give the years I have left, to him so he can continue, but that is not to be.
The Pope Leo who heard the discussion between Jesus and the Devil that given 75 years he could crush the church. I have to give the Devil his due, he has done a hell of a great job. Well he was an angel, maybe a fallen one, but an angel who used to work for a lovely but very strict Boss. We have been sickened by what evil that has been done in our name. He, Pope Benedict XVI was a man who has began the slow reconstruction.
I am glad I was alive during his time and JPII.
I have much fear, I hope I have much more Hope.
Let us hope and pray Tom – the Holy Spirit guides the Church, after all.
This was sure a show-stopper! I wish him a peaceful and restful retirement.
Me too
Amen. What an incredible Supreme Pastor
God bless Papa Bene always. Our Great “German-Shepherd” =D
Yes, a great Pope, and a great Christian.
Le Roi c’est mort; vive le Roi! is ancient, and modern. Interregnums are scary enough in stable, quiet times; in today’s religious and financial turmoil, scary doesn’t begin to describe things, seems to me.
His Holiness quit, not because he wanted to, but because he had to, I believe. Benedict is pledged to disappear into a cloister, leaving a clear field for his successor, who may find that gift a bit lonely…and his new chore reminiscent of cleaning the Augean stables, with a spoon!
It seems a time for Catholics to get their communal act together…
